Woven Together is a program that does exactly that: it weaves people and place into a coherent, lived experience. Inspired by the rhythms and proportions of Charleston, SC, the project adopts a simple, yet intentional frame that encourages interaction within the “in between” spaces— the spaces where architecture and community meet. The design begins with establishing a central “core” in the site: a set of three interior courtyards around which all circulation flows. By situating these courtyards at the ground level and placing them at the heart of the project, the surrounding structure is able to match the scale and vernacular character of Charleston’s streetscape, inviting the public into the site, while still protecting the essential privacy of residents. Once these communal spaces are defined, the residential units are arranged around their geometry on the upper levels. Lifting the homes above the ground not only enhances visual distinction between the public and the private, but it also maintains opportunities for visual and social connection. This elevation strategy offers a practical benefit as well: by raising the units, the project provides a resilient buffer against Charleston’s frequent flooding and storm events. The open spacing between volumes further improves environmental performance by allowing air to move freely through the building, mitigating pressure from hurricane-force winds and enhancing natural ventilation. In these layered “in between” zones, residents experience a variety of shared and transitional spaces— porches between neighboring units, elevated walkways that ring the courtyards, and framed views that open towards the city and the harbor. Together these elements create an environment that supports both community and individual retreat, embodying the project’s core idea of weaving people and place into a harmonious whole.
